Another banner day on the creek.

Wow is all I can say about the fish today. My buddy “Steve” and I got into 27 fish today, and I was able to land 8 of 11, but Steve went 1 for 16, not a great percentage for the Stevenator!!. The caliber of the fish this year is great, and they are hot right now. The bite is on big time, and the water is still perfect, even after the rain. To all those not getting into these fish on the creek, just keep trying, you will get them.

Just plain good fishing!!

Today, like the other before it, was great. I don’t really know the exact number of hookups between the guys I was with, but it was huge. I know for sure, over 25 hookups, with around 15 landed. The fish are still in great shape, and the females are starting to show up. Smaller females are the first to run up stream, followed later by the big females, and the big native bucks. One of the fish I caught today was a real nice size native (Admittedly he unintentionally foul hooked, and promptly released) this happens sometimes when there are a lot of fish confined in a small area, at least they still take good pics. There was only one other foul hook today, and he popped off right away. Otherwise they were all biters. This big native was also landed by a friend of mine, almost a month ago, just 1/4 down stream. Shows that the natives are in no hurry to get upstream. Water levels are perfect for fly fishing. The fish are still on the bite. Clarity is perfect, and the fish seem to be coming in good numbers this season. Hope to see more of this as the month wears on. Here are the pics from today’s fish. Like I said yesterday, I am releasing all my fish now, so the ones with the blood, are Damon’s fish (or at least the ones he took home 🙂 ).

Flashes of chrome everywhere!

Everywhere I looked today, I saw flashes of chrome going by. Steelies were on the move in the creek today, and they were also on the bite. I got in late today, but it did not seem to change the outcome.  I hooked up within the first five minutes, but promptly lost it. I headed down to where my buddy was fishing one of our honey holes, where he had already hooked and lost 3 fish, and was getting ready to hook up again when I got there. After leaving this hole, we headed down a bit further, and starting seeing more fish. I hooked, and landed one small, darker buck, and released it. After this, my buddy (Matt) got into a nice buck, and landed it. Along the way, I hooked up  a nice big female, that shook her head, and spit the hook. When I came upon Matt, with his fish, he informed me that he got it on his first cast into the hole. I said “that is cool”, and took a cast in the hole. I also hooked up on my first cast, and landed a perfect chrome female. I also hooked and lost another couple fish in this hole.

By the way, I leave all my eggs on the bank from my females. So if you see any eggs laying around, you can feel free to take them with you, (then go somewhere else and use them!) LOL.

It was a great day today, with the total hook ups at 12 between Matt and I. I am now going to be releasing my fish, so all those that I am landing, are still available to the other fisherman out there.

Slowing down a bit!

The creek has dropped significantly over the last couple of days, and today it was almost to low. The fish have stopped moving in earnest, like they have been. I saw the same fish today, in a hole I saw him in yesterday. Believe me when I tell, I know that fish well, so I know it was the same one. This tells me that the movement came to a halt last night when the water went down. P1117014

Rain is in the forecast for the next couple of days, and this should bring in another fresh batch. P1117005

The hatchery pen is holding about 75 fish, and the pool below the entrance may have the same amount. If my predictions are correct, this leaves between 7 and 9 hundred left to fish for. I think this year is going to be around 1,100 to 1,300 return to the hatch. Hopefully I am right, check this site again at the end of the year, and see how close I get?.

I was able to get into 5 fish today, and landed 3 of them. Again today, I got one on my first cast, this is always a good start to the morning. Got a few pics to share.

I will be returning to Yakutat at the end of March, so I hope to get into several more fish before that, and if you are on the creek, I hope to see you hooked up and getting into em’.

Ideceive fish, If you see me there again, come and talk to me. I have some thing for you!.

Does it get any better than this!

Well I hope it does get even better as the season goes on. Today was good from the get go. Steve, Damon, and I met up at the river, and stared hooking up right away. I hooked up first, then Steve, then Damon. Soon after Steve hooked up again. We lost all these fish, and headed down river. It seemed as though all the holes had fish today. One particular hole was packed with fish, and we were able to hook up with 6 fish in about ten minutes. Only landed one of these fish though. Throughout the day, it seemed as though one of us had a fish on at all times. I believe the final count was near twenty fish hooked, with only 3 to the bank, (One each). Not a bad day at all. We finished up at noon, had we stayed all day, we would have probably hit into more than thirty fish. I did get another female, as well did Damon. Looks like the females are coming up, and soon the brood stock big boys will be here, along with some big native fish. Also the larger females will be coming up in the next couple of weeks. These big females will tear you up like nothing else!!!!. They are a blast!. Here are the pics from today, along with some panoramic views.

Another day, Another killing on the river!!

Well today I was able to land at least a couple of fish. The hook ups were not as frequent today, but they were still there. I was met at the stream today by my brother “Hobo Joe”, and his father in_law “Sean”. I got a fish on my first cast, and my brother was there to see it, (That was great). We fished hard today, and got into several fish, (many to strong to hold). My brother was able to hook up with at least 3, maybe 4, not sure about the last one. He did lose them all, but he was hooking up, (Not bad for a guy who only fishes once or twice a year). Sean did hit into one for a second, but then I think he was just content watching and learning a bit about small, fast, stream fishing. I do believe he enjoyed himself, despite not fishing much. I got into 8 fish today, and was able to bank 2, the second one being the first female I have encountered in weeks. She had really small eggs, and was chrome bright. The male in the morning was also a very nice fish, with just a bit of color. A buddy of mine got a 15 Lbs buck today, that was in great condition. A little color on the outside, but the cut was beautiful.

Water is perfect, temperature is perfect, fishing is perfect, the amount of people this year is ridiculous!.

This may be a direct result of this web page, my big mouth, and the Oregon Fishing Forum postings. I must say though, that even though there are a few more competitors this year, the amount of fish being caught by them, seems to be very low, and not effecting me or my friends at all.

At least we have experience going for us. See ya all out there! Here are the pics from today.

Many hook ups!!

I got into so many fish today, I thought I pulled a muscle in my shoulder. I got beat up though, by never putting one on the bank, except one, that I released thinking I would get more later on. I was wrong. I hooked up with 14 or 15 Steelies today, “one could have been an old Silver”. It was perfect conditions, and the fish were aggressive again today. I am not used to this aggressive behavior this year, but I am liking it. The fish I got into today, were nice, big, bright fish, and they schooled me. It seems as though every year I get schooled for one good day. And it is never on those days when I only hook 3 or 4, it always happens when I have a banner day hooking up. Well here is the one pic of the one I released.

Another good one today.

Well the water is still perfect, but the fish were more scarce today. We struggled at the beginning, but I was able to get into 3, landed all, but one was fouled, so I released, and then was able to get two good ones. These were real nice bucks today. Yesterday’s fish had a bit of color, but today, they were chrome!. Going again everyday from here on out, unless the water blows out. Remember, just because the water goes up, does not mean the fish stop moving, they are just closer to the bank!!. Don’t let high water keep you from getting into fish, just read the water, and you will still find them.

New Years Steel on the move!

Today was the first day of the year back on the creek for me. My photographer came in last night to join me, and what a day we had. Although the pics are great from today, a video camera would have really told the story. We started off quick this morning, with 3 fish on the bank, and tagged before 9:00am. After a short relaxation period, we got at again. In the next 3 hours, we hooked up with 14 Steelhead, landed a total of four, and lost some really nice pigs. One fish, “That we did get”, ripped me through some nasty white water and trees. I was forced to take chase, and work my way through these obstacles, until finally landing this Steelie about 200 yards. down river. This one really wore me out, but I did muster the strength to hook up with 2 more before we left at 12:30. Brian, “My photographer”, go into 5 nice fish, but was unable to bank these strong fish. The water level is perfect, and the clarity is the best you can ask for. I think it is going to be a good year! The fish are here, and they are biting, and the numbers are already better than last year.

This is the fish that just about wore me completely out. My photographer had to hold the fish, I was too tired.

The pics are great, but a vid would have really done the trick.

Here we go again!

Ok, it’s on now!!. The fish are starting to show up in the creek now. If this is any indication of what the season is shaping up to be, then it is going to be a good one. The snow hit just after we left today, so tomorrow should be great for blood in the snow. Here are the pics from today. Can’t wait for tomorrow to get here!!
