Water even higher, but cleared up nice.

Today was suppose to be me and another fisherman, that I met last year, during the trout opener at Lake Lenice. Seems as though Todd came own with the flu, so I went at it solo, not even my dog went today. Indy stayed home due to the rain. She got real wet and cold the day before, so she refused to get out of bed this morning. I was expecting the river to be high and muddy, but instead it was still high, but had cleared up real nice. I did not see allot of fish moving through the creek though. I was positioned in an area that had a very good view of anything moving up stream. I saw only a few fish move through, a total of five to be exact. These five fish moved up and sat in front of me the entire morning, so the fish are holding up in this high water, which means as soon as it starts to drop, they will haul fin upstream. I was able to get into four fish and land two of them, before the water started to rise even more. There were two fish today that drove me crazy. These two fish positioned themselves under some branches that were hanging down into the water. Just the tips of the braches were in the water, but the fish were directly underneath them. I tried for hours to get these fish, and all I did was lose 8 flies on that dang tree. This is the first time I can remember, that I was not able to get fish that I could see. If the water was just an inch lower I could have drifted under and into those fish, but it was not to be. Here is the pics from today.

Well the water went way up today. Maybe 9 inches, and turned a chocolate brown. I can’t believe this little bit of rain could cause this to happen, but it did. I was able to get into four fish today, before the water went brown, but after that it was over. Here are the pics from today, also I am a gluten for punishment, so I will go again tomorrow in hopes that the water will clear a bit tonight.

Water up, and fish in!! YeeHaaaw

It’s about time!! Today the water level was on the rise, and the fish were on the move. I saw more fish in the first hour today, than I have in total the entire year. I was able to get into about 20 or more fish today, and landed a meager 7 fish, but what a day I had. I saw fish from the first minute to the last today, I am very excited about the next two weeks. The rain is suppose to hit good tonight, so I am hoping they are wrong and the rain will just hit in small spurts throughout the next week. The creek came up about 3 inches today while I was fishing, but stayed relatively clear. The rain has stopped for now, and I am thinking I have one more good day if the rain does come, before it may blow out. Here are the pics from today.

Ok Matt and I are going in tomorrow to look for the log jam. If we find it, then we can get someone to remove it and the fish can get going on up river. If you read this before tomorrow morning, we will be there at about 7 am and then we are just going to start walking in until we find it, or it gets dark, Ha Ha. Anyway if you want to join, be at the hatchery parking lot up by the mail box where we all park to walk in to fish. We will be getting under way at about 7:15 am. Hope to see someone else there to help.

Today I was just to tired to go fishing, but I will be back at it tomorrow.

Ryan Hatfield if you are reading, please send me another message. I can’t get an email out to you with the address you gave me. Call me so we can set up a time to go. Also Donny I need to know if you still want to come out. And Mark let me know when you are going to be here. Also I have talked to another gentle that is friends with Pete Durney, and I need to know if you are going to want to fish still. I have lost all your numbers and I need to know when you are all going to be here, or if you are coming or not.

Thanks and let me know.

Steelies on the move

Another day on the creek has produced some real nice fish. I was able to get into 7 fish today, and it was fast and furious right out of the gate. I got into my first fish within just a few minutes, but he came unbuttoned. I got into another one fairly quickly, and it too came undone. Not discouraged, the third one came to the bank. I lost the next one, but was able land the two that came after that one. I then sat back to help a friend of mine that I met there today. I had also run into a fisherman ("Tom") at the creek two days ago. He was having a hard time believing me when I told him the amount of fish I was producing. So I gave Tom my web site address and had him get ahold of me if he wanted to go through the creek with me, and hopefully I could give him a few hints on what I was doing different. Tom got ahold of me the next day, and I met with him also this morning. I believe after the first ten minutes of the morning, Tom was a believer. I hope through out the day I was able to help a little bit. My buddy "Doug", that you have seen before with the big king from the coast was giving his best shot. He had a tough start, but after spotting a fish for him in a little white water pocket, Doug was hooked up, and landed a nice 7 pound buck, which I forgot to get a picture of. The fish that Doug got into was laying in about 2 feet of fast running water. This fish was moving around in the feeding lanes and being very active. At first the fish was moving around to much to get a fly to it. When I saw that it moved into a little feeding lane at the top of the run I knew Doug was going to hook up. I think it was the third cast after the fish settled, when Doug reared back and said "There he is", and the fight was on. It was a good fight, but we won in the end.. I will try to go again tomorrow, but no promises. I am getting beat up real bad by these fish everyday. I will fish until I cant walk or cast, then I will have my chiropractor fix me up, and I fish some more. Expect more updates everyday that I can get up and walk.

Well the fishing on the creek today was a bit slower than it has been, but I was still able to bring a couple to the camera. The first part of the morning was very disappointing, to both me and my fishing partner. After the first hour of seeing no fish, we kept walking down stream, peering into all the small white water pockets along the way. Finally we came across two fish laying behind a rock in some fairly stiff water. It took a good twenty minutes just to figure out how to get our flies down into the seam these fish were resting in. I hooked up the first one after loading my leader down with split shot, and essentially slowing the drift down to a very slow presentation. It worked like a charm. I was hooked up, but not for too long, before the hooked returned with no fish on the end. We then worked the second fish for close to an hour. Finally Matt gave up and headed on down stream, I was not going to let this fish get the best of me, so I stayed and hammered this fish for another 20 minutes. My perseverance paid off in a big way. I hooked up and this fish tore me up. I was able to get this nice little 8 pound fish to the bank. After getting a pic, I took off to find out what Matt may have found downstream. When I did find him, he was on top of three fish at the head of a good size hole. The fish were held up against a wall of rock with a nice riffle over the top. Matt fished for some time for these fish, but there were no takers for him. While Matt was fishing the head of the hole, I looked up a bit further into the faster water, and was able to spot a nice big male sitting in the tail end of this little pocket. It was not to long before I was hooked up again, and this was a nice size male. After landing this fish, I sat back and waited for Matt to pull one out. Matt just couldn’t get the fish to cooperate with him today, so after he got hung up and lost his gear on the bottom, I stepped up to give it another shot. Again it was not long before I was on. This fish was a real nice chrome female with a good fight in her. I landed the fish, and told Matt that there was at least one more fish in the slot and that he should get in there and get em’. He stepped up and was soon hung on the bottom again, (Some days are just like that, no matter what you do, nothing goes right). He was not able to retrieve his gear, and so he was in the pits again, and it was my turn. I got up and took about 3 casts when my tip stopped, I set the hook and it was on again. I landed the fish, took the picture, released the fish, and called it a day. Here are the pic’s from today, should have more coming on a daily basis.

Today I ventured out with a friend of mine, that I had met at Eagle creek about 7 years ago. We floated a well known river here in the Portland Oregon, and the river did not disappoint. We spent the first hour or so working our way down to the fish. After arriving at the predetermined spot, we started throwing out our bobber and jig set ups. At first it was a bit different for me, not fishing with anything but a fly rod for so long, pitching a bait caster was something I thought I may have some trouble with to start, but everything went fine from the first cast. We hooked up with four nice Steelies, having to release two, because they possessed a full adipose fin, making them a (“Native fish”?)?????. which must be released immediately unharmed. I got some pics of the fish we did keep, and here they are. Also one pic from Eagle creek. Got this one on Sunday, on the creek.
