Third day with the Schneider’s

30 Thursday Apr 2009

Another 3:30 am launch for me today. We have been launching the boat in the dark the last 2 days, to beat the sun. During Steelhead season, the worst enemy you can have, is the sunshine on the water. The Situk river runs low and clear during Steelhead season, and the sun turns these fish into iron traps. Their mouth won’t even open to breath. So the last couple days we have left early enough to beat the sun to the first couple holes. It has paid off, with several more hookups in the morning than previously done. We go into several fish today, and put 6 to the net. Here are the pics and a nice release vid from today.

Good day on the river today!!

It got going today allot better than the last week. The little bit of rain we got yesterday brought the water up just enough to get the fish on the bite. We left the Yakutat Lodge parking lot at 6 am and headed out to nine mile bridge. We stopped in the peanut hole, and brought one fish to the boat within the first ten minutes. After this first stop, it seemed like it was going to be the same as the last week, just one or two fish for the day. Then we stopped in a little run next to fallen tree and pulled up on the bank to relieve ourselves. During this time Tim cast a clown fart in next to the tree and hooked up right away. So we stayed and got into another real nice fish, both of which got away. After this we started stopping at all the fallen tree's. One more spot was productive, and we landed a nice chromer. Then we pulled into a nice deep hole just above the weir, and in less than an hour we got into 7 fish, and put four on the bank, including two 36" bucks. That topped off the day in a great way, and after this we headed to the landing with smiles and hopes for tomorrow being even better.

Here is the fish porn of the 6 we brought in, and a few underwater releases for you.

Bite is finally picking up.

Today the rain fell, and the fish got going. The bite picked up greatly. The two gentlemen I took today had never caught Steelhead before, and were looking forward to getting into some nice fish. They were able to hook up with more than 10 fish, but only two made it to the boat. They had a great time, and the fish did not disappoint. Allen got both of the fish to the boat, and Bill was able to fight with 5 fish, but unable to land this beauties.

I am hoping that the bite continues to be good. The Spring fish are coming now in really good numbers, and this should continue for another week or two, also the winter fish are starting to come out of the lake now and filling up the upper stretches of the river. So the fishing is getting good now. Here is the fish porn for the day.

Well Bud Gore had his last trip down the Situk for the year. The bite never really did pick up today, but after yesterday’s big fish, it really did not matter. Well it did, but the big boy did buffer the blow. Bud was able to get into some fish, and landed 2. I also got into one, incidentally, and landed it also. Here are the pics from today.

44 inches, 22 girth, 27 LBS. WOW!!!

What a fish we got today. The fishing was real slow for the first part of the morning. We hit the half way hole on the river, and there was a good amount of fish in the hole. We spent the first hour throwing pink jigs under floats, with no takers. We then switched to black and red, and the bite lit up. In the three hours we spent there, Bud got into 7 fish, and landed 2, but the 2 he put to the net were spectacular. The first one was a huge 44 inch spring male, with a 22 inch girth. The second one about twenty minutes later went 39 inches, and was a winter fish. These are two of the biggest fish I have seen this season, and the 44 is the biggest caught in my boat. What a fish.

Today was a bit tougher. The sun shined all day, and the fish went into hiding. We did find some late in the day, that were willing to bite, but only one came to the boat. Sometimes that the way it goes. Here is the pic from today, and also a underwater release video.

Well 3 clients and I headed out from the Yakutat Lodge this morning, hoping for a great day of fishing. Well the fishing was not off the hook, but it was not all that bad either. We spent about 10 and a half hours on the water, with 6 hours of that, just rowing the 14 mile stretch. We spent about 4 hours fishing in earnest. The clients got into 8 fish between the three of them, and landed 5, (Not all that bad for the beginning of the season).

Here is your fish porn for the day. Also a real good video of Jumping Steel.

Well I spent another day on the river, finishing up the tent camp owned by the Yakutat Lodge. We have just to build the new beds, and it will be complete. After the work was done, I headed on down, with the 2 newest members of our guide staff, (“Luke @ Rick”).

Rick is a retired music teacher, turned guide. Rick guides on the Oregon coastal waters near Mapleton Oregon.

Luke is an experienced fisherman, who has fished the Bearing sea, and also ran jet boats in the past.

We were able to fish for a small amount of time. Here are some pics of the fish that made it to the bank, and also a shot of the competed tent camp, (“Before paint”).
