Big Native on the Sandy:

Hit up the Sandy river again today here in Oregon before I head north to AK. Ed Fast was at the helm once more as we made the float from Revenue bridge, down through the Cedar creek area, and ending up at Dodge park. The first stop seemed to be a bust for about the first 45 min to an hour, and then I got a good take, but missed it. Seconds later, Ian hits what could have been the same fish, in the same spot. This nice native buck put up one hell of a fight, culminating in a great set of pics before the release. Soon after, I walked a bit down stream and got nailed and missed another fish. I moved back up to the original spot, shot one in a bit closer and “Wham” I was hooked up with a nice dime bright nate. Not much for size, but she made up for it in chromeness and just pure spunk. We killed that spot and headed down to the next killing zone. Ed let me have what he said “is the spot to get em’”, but as he tossed in above me, his wfo worm about lost it’s arse to a fish, but the fish let go just in time. I fish the spot Ed said was “it” with no results. I stepped off the rock and Ed let a brand new summer have it! He nailed this beauty and brought to the bank for supper. Now I step up where Ed had the worm almost ripped up. I throw out my fish producing clown fart, AKA Aeropuff, and the next thing I know is that the end of my rod is slammed and there is flashes of large chrome in the drift. The fight was a great one, with one great run, and then just a power struggle to the end. This great female nate taped out at exactly 35”, with a girth that had to almost match. She was so fat and thick, that I though I was holding a Chinook. It was a great day with a couple great guys to fish with and just hang around with for the day. Thanks again Ed for he invite, and I will get you back before I go!!

Can you find the two fish in this shot, and the cat? Only one fish is real, but the water makes it look as though there is another one and a cat. It’s really cool how the reflections do this. Ian and I thought this was a mis pic, but then we spent more time looking at this one than all the fish pics.

Columbia Kings today:

Well I usually don’t go plunking, but with all the rivers blown and muddy it was my only real choice. It took only about ten minutes to get my Springer to the bank, and then it died for Tommy and I for hours. During this time we did see several fish hooked and landed, and also many lost. The best was the Summer Steelhead I saw getting caught. That’s my next fish I hope before I head back to AK. Here are a few pics from today, and if the wife is feeling better in the morning we are hitting it up again.

Days on the clack.

Hit up the sandy and the Clackamas this week. Tommy and I got out in the raft and hit the sandy when it was high. No results at all,but had a good time in the rain anyway. Hit up the Clackamas the next day with Ian, Brent and I. I hooked up with four fish, and put two to the boat, both hatches. So I got to kill something at least. It was not red hot, but fish were landed, and fun was had. After Ian left, a guide (Forrest Foxworthy) with a jet boat invited us out to do some back trolling. Forrest Foxworthy was one of the most knowledgeable fisherman I have been with for a long time. He knows his stuff to perfection. He fishes the Clackamas, Willamette, Columbia, but his expertise lies on the banks of the Deschutes river. Fishing it for several years, he was one of the first Oregon guides, and the one to get a hold of  to book a great trip with a great guide.

His fee is a minimal amount of only 200 dollars a day. I believe you can’t go wrong with this guide.

You can get a hold of him at 1 503 720 6993 to book a trip. You can’t go wrong.

Well no fishing yet, but I took this video last night of two young boys singing to my wife. The older of the two brothers sang to her 2 years ago also. It was fun to have them around, and they sang for about 1 hour straight. They are good!!.

Clown fart finds Oregon.

It up the Sandy river today with great results. Between the four of us, we went 10 for 19. Not a bad day after all is said and done. I fished hard all morning with this little soft okie egg drifter that has been doing the trick a couple times out, but no today. I only touched one fish before 9am. Then I thought to myself, this water looked similar to the water I had fished earlier in the year, when I used an aeropuff (Clown Fart). Well it only took one cast to find out that this was the way to go. I was hooked up with a nice buck, and then 2 casts later I was into the second one, and she was a beauty. So only 3 casts to get two fish once I changed over to the clown fart. Looks like I may have to throw these a lot more in the near future in Oregon.

Flymstr;

Great day and great week.

Well the Steelhead seem to be everywhere this season, and they just keep coming. The Oregon coastal streams are seeing record numbers of hatchery returns, and the Natives are in, and have been around since January, (A couple months early for most years). I have been fishing a lot of different water this season, due to Eagle Creek being a bust. I fished the Sandy, Wilson, Alsea, and another couple small unlisted streams through the week, and have had some good success. There have also been some large fish caught recently down along the coast line.

Today though I had a chance a a great trip with a great guide on the Sandy river (Ed Fast). We started out at Revenue bridge and headed down towards Dodge. Along the way, we saw fish darting out of tail outs and from behind boulders like crazy during certain times during the day. Ed said the water was low and clearer than most times during the year, giving us that uncommon ability to see these beautiful fish in there natural areas. My buddy Ian accompanied us along the way also, and is also a great guy to spend the day with on the water. We headed down a couple miles before wetting our gear and hooking up. As Ed and Ian fished and area known to produce fish, I headed down to a drift I have not fished for nearly 20 years. To my surprise it was nearly the same as it was before. As I fished it I notice up river that Ed was landing a nice little hatch buck #1. During my hour or so of time in this one slot, I was able to hook up 3 fish, but lost all due to using to light of leader. After some time, Ed and Ian came down in the raft to join me in the drift. I was able to hook up and again loose another. I then switched to 10 Lb test instead of the 6 I was using. This made the difference since the next fish I hooked was a 10 to 12 pounds native buck that put up one hell of a fight. The Ian took the reins and landed a great little hatch fish. I don’t remember who hooked up next after that, but it was non stop for some time that’s for sure. The total of the day as best I can figure was 6 for15 or 16. I know I lost 7 fish that I fought or some time. It was a great day on the water.

If you are looking for a great guide to fish with on the upper Sandy, then you need to get a hold of Ed fast. He runs a double pontoon boat that he handles like a professional, he has to be one of the best out there. I believe he has been doing it now for more the 10 years, and it shows. He knew exactly where the fish would be, and like I said, his boat handling skills were perfect if not better. Ed has a great personality, helpful, friendly, and willing to share his knowledge to get you into fish. I would definitely recommend hin for anyone that wants to catch fish. He also runs many of the coastal rives, where he also ramps the fish.

Flymstr;

Got out on a float again.

Hit up a new coastal river today from the boat. My buddy Ty got a hold of me the night before last and said  “The fishing is hot”, come on down. With no hesitation I got a hold of Damon, and we headed out that way at 4 this morning. After a 3 hour drive, we met up with Ty in the town of Philomath to head to the river. It was a beautiful morning with no pressure from other boats or bank fisherman. We started out strong, with about a dozen or more cutthroat to the boat, and then I hit into a nice Winter Steelhead. This was the first of 14 to take our presentation, and 6 fell to the net and camera. It was a great day of fishing from dark to dark, and well worth the drive. Here are the pics from the day, and also a few pics from eagle creek last week and gnat, and big creek from yesterday with Tommy and Damon. I stayed home yesterday and took it easy so they could catch some. LOL. Enjoy the pics.

Huge Nate on Sandy, and a week in review.

Wow what a great week of fishing this has been. Today I stayed local and hit up the Sandy river. After a couple of hours of nothing, my buddy Johnny hits into a big fat Native buck. This was a great fight, and it was good to see Johnny get a big boy. I got some great underwater vids of this fish. Also all the pics from the week have come in, and I hope you enjoy them. I will try not to duplicate from the last couple days of pics.

Flymstr;

Long time coming.

Well last July I took a bit of a vacation to come back to Oregon for some King fishing on my favorite creek. It took me a long time to get around to putting up the pics, but I am now ready to show the world what they have been missing. These are some of the best jump shots of big Kings I have seen. This creek is so small that these fish have no choice but to rocket up at out of the water. During the ten day vacation I was able to land 21 of these great fish, all on fly rod to boot. I hope you enjoy the pics and scenery shots.
