Clear water Steel!!

The creek is on the drop, and very clear right now!. I was not out there yesterday, but my buddies were, and I got some pics from their day. Today I was on the creek with Damon and Richard. We got into fish throughout the entire day. I think we decided that we saw about 15 fish, and landed 8 of them, and hooked all but 2 that I can think of. We had some good aggressive bucks today, that are guarding their egg wagons. When they get like this, they are very likely to bite anything in the vicinity. Got some good pics today, and a couple vids coming up as I get them together. Hope you are all catching fish!!

P.S. I lost my Leatherman on either Friday,Saturday, or Sunday at the creek. I set it down on the bank and forgot it. If anyone who reads this, found it, or knows someone who did, please return it to me. It has some sentimental value (Gift from my brother for first year in Alaska), I would very much like to have it returned it anyone knows where it is. Thanks.

Two days of good fishing!

The last two days on the creek, have been good. Had some trouble with the site last night, so yesterday’s pics will be added in today. I had a great day yesterday, going 6 for 9. I was only able to pics of four of them, because two of them decided to move just as the camera was going off. I think I may have got one of them flipping away. Today was a bit of a different day for me. I took a couple fisherman down today, and spent the day working to get them into some fish. Emmit and Shane have been fishing the creek this season with no luck. So today we got together, and they hooked up with some Steelhead. Emmit, I believe got two fish on, and Shane had 5. Not to bad for 8 hours of fishing. They did not get any to the bank, but that is not always what it is about. I hope the information I gave them, will help them with Steelhead fishing. I was able to touch 6, and land 4. For some reason I touched two right in the middle of the back in some fast water. I guess I was just getting in the wrong spot in the right area. Oh well, some times that happens, you have to take the good with the bad I guess. Anyway, back to the fish. The fish are getting colored up a bit more now, but some fresh fish are still showing up along the creek. I had a report today, that there are still Eagle Creek fish being caught at the mouth of the Clack., and the ODFW site says, there may be two hundred or more still coming up. Crossing my fingers on that one. I thought the creek would have reacted better to the recent rains, but the amount it came up, was erased today as I watched it fall and clear throughout the day. We needed a bit more moisture to really bring in the fish. It looks like we are going to be in a trickle effect with the fish for March, unless something changes with the weather. This may be a blessing in disguise though. If the rain does not come, then at least we have some fish all the way through mid April. So here are the pics from the last two days.

Well I don’t really know what to write anymore about the creek. The fish are still there, and I have had some great days this week. Today was a good day for the three of us. (Damon, Richard, and I). We hooked up with nearly 15 fish, and landed a good percentage of them. Got some great video today, and hope to get more tomorrow. Talked to the hatchery guys, and got some info. They have processed 927, and have about 30 in the trap now. The ODFW site claims that Eagle Creek fish are still being caught as far down as the mouth of the Clack. Conditions remain low and clear. With the weather we are having now, you have to fish in tight behind rocks with hard white water spilling over. They are there, they are just tight in the white water. Light blue and white are the ticket for the rest of the month, and then should be switching to purple and darker blues.

Great to still have fish coming!

They just keep showing up!!!!! Although the best part of the season had generally been during this week, this year the peak came early on. The peak may be over, but the fish are continuing their march upstream. I met up with Damon and Richard today, for a little bit of fishing. We got into fish from the get go. We all got into fish in the first 2 runs we fished. Damon and I both landed 2 fish today, and I do believe he may have hooked one more fish than I did today. (“Crap”). I can’t let that happen again, it’s bad for my rep… As a total for the day, I am just going to say we had a great one again. Water is up just a bit after the rain this week, but will be dropping quickly as the temp. rises, and the sky’s clear. The fish are turning color now, and some seem to be beat up a bit. This is mainly from fighting with other fish, and beating their way upstream in low water conditions. Here are the pics. I don’t know why, but I only have pics of a few fish. My friend did not send the pics last night that he took, so only a couple, but some good vids for you though.

The Steelhead in the creek are creeping in, in small groups. The last two days, we have seen several fish, but just in a small area. Today we got into several fish at first, then it slowed to a crawl. Later in the day, as we worked our way back through the original area, we were able to hook up several more times. So instead of a steady run of fish, they are only available in little spurts. Yesterday I was able to hook up with 13 fish, but again I only landed 1. Richard got a perfect little chromer. “I was jealous of this fish”. Damon was skunked yesterday, which is very uncommon!!! Today was even better all around. I was able to hook up with 8 and land 3. Damon got into 5 and landed 3. Richard got into about 8 also, and landed 2. The water is still low and clear, but if you know how to work this water, you will be very successful. Here are the pics from the last two days. Three of these fish were natives. Maybe the end is near????

Native “Big red” comes back for more!!!!

Wow, can you believe this big native came back for another round today. This native has been caught by the whole gang now, and hooked by the rest of at least once. I have 5 time big nateP1237036P1237037P1147005the pics and dates coming, but for now I have some great pics of him from today. I believe, between the four of us, we have landed this fish 6 times, and have been hooked up with this beast, at least 10 other times throughout the last month and a half.

Damon, Richard, Doug, and myself, started out this morning at day light, and Damon hooked up on his first cast through. I was not so fortunate, and it took me three holes to find my first hook up.

The bigger fish I talked about in yesterday’s post are starting to show up. Two days ago I hooked 21 fish, all between 5 and 9 pounds. Today we hooked a combined 10 fish, and only one was under 10 pounds. At least two of the fish we saw today, were in high teens, to twenty pound hatchery’s. I had one on, that I believe went at least 17 to 20 pounds. This fish tore me up, and let me go. We were able to bank a total of 5 fish, including one big hen I took at the end of the day. We got some perfect underwater video of the fight. I have been wanting to get underwater fight video forever, but never had the help to do so. Well today, it all came together, and we got the video i have been wanting……..  This video is great. Also we got great pics today, and some more video’s, from other fish that tore us up today.

The creek is real low and clear, and the fish are hiding deep in the white water, although we did come across fish in the deeper pools today, unlike 2 days ago when there was nothing in the slow water. In these deep holes, the fish are resting up, and getting a bite usually means being on them before sun up. When the light hits the water, they shut down for the day, and then you have a tough time getting anywhere near them. There are a few tricks to get a reaction, but this is a well kept secret, that I am not ready to share. Maybe once I can’t fish anymore I will pass it on. Check out the vids, and pics from today, and I hope to have more tomorrow.

I downloaded the original underwater, and then a compilation using this vid and several others, including a great song for the vids!!

The first one is the best underwater fight video I have ever had.

(Thanks to Damon’s camera work, and I was lucky enough to be able to maneuver the fish just right for him).

Good luck out there,

LDR’s still running strong!

Well the hook up’s came in bunches today. We had a great start, with 5 hookups within the first hour, but I ldr’ed them all. The long distance releasing I have become accustom to this season, is starting to kill me. I figured after this start, that I would be able to start landing more for the day. That did not happen! I was however, able to land one fish during the day, but with 21 hookups, that is a terrible percentage to face. The fish were really tight in the white water today, due to the low, clear conditions of the creek. With the sun in the sky, and the glare on the water at it’s worst, sighting fish was not easy either. The bite did seem to pick up from last week. I think this was due to the small amount of rain that fell the night before. I took a look at the hatchery again, and it appeared as if there were around 30 fish in the trap, and another 30 below the ladder in the pool. It still seems to me, that we should be looking at another push before we can say it is officially over for the season. As the season draws to a  close, I expect to see a few more natives show up, and also the big bucks that always come in at the end of the run. There should also be another push of larger females just after the males arrive. Here is the pic of the one I landed, and also a few vids from the season that did not make it up here before. By the way, my buddy Steve who was with me, was able to hook up with 2 fish, but he also had an ldr day.
