Great one today

Sockeye’s still all over the river, and the pinks are starting to show up in little groups. Soon there will be close to a million Pink Salmon in the river. They will be fun at first, but when the Silvers hit the system in the second week of August, they will just be in the way. Not to many pics today, but that’s ok I hope. Another baby Steel vid though. When I get a chance, I am doing another Play Fish Mag. issue. Tell me if you want it or not, also a best of for the last two years on Steelhead. I am thinking about opening an on-line tackle store, "Tell me what you think". Yakutat Lodge is booming right now, and all the guides are running the river, and coming back with real nice Chrome fresh fish. Get here if you can,"""STEVE"""!!! See ya all tomorrow.

Another great day on the Situk River today. I have been chased off by a Sow and her cub the last couple of days. I was with these two gentlemen yesterday in the afternoon, and we had five nice Sockeye stolen by the bears. Today we were chased out of two different fishing spots, and she also chased the other guides around the river. We may have to have something done about this one. I emptied a half can of bear spray directly in her face yesterday, and she walked right through it, without a blink. If they can do that, then they are way to aggressive for my liking. I can usually handle the bears with no problem, but this one raises the hair on the back of my neck. Anyway, got some good pics and vids today, take a look and tell me what you all think. The baby Steelhead vid is great. See ya all tomorrow.

Hey I got some pics in from Home recently, of some real nice Kings, so I thought I would show you. I can’t tell you where exactly, but those of you whom I have told about this new run, you should have no problem finding these fish. They look real good and healthy, so the fear of sick fish should be void. Have fun if you find them.

The internet is always slow this time of year, so here is the last couple of days in one shot. It has been nothing but spectacular this year. There are over 30 thousand Sockeye in the river, and the Kings seem to be coming in good numbers. Although this is true about the Kings, the season will probably still not open for retention. In order to catch and release these fish, you will need to have a king stamp with you, even for the Jack Kings. Sockeye continue to be on the march in good numbers, so come get em’, if you can. The weather has been hot!!. Yesterday it was 85, and today is 90 degrees, not what we are used to around here. Here are some pic from the last couple trips.

Well it was the final day for the Johnston group to get into some nice fish. They were not disappointed. The numbers of fish in the river this year is just overwhelming. The top end of the river is holding the majority of the fish, that are hanging out. The area from the forks, where the old Situk joins the Situk itself, i just loaded with fish. There are a few holes above the forks that are also holding fish, and a few below. Once you have passed those areas, you have along way till you get to the next fishable area that is holding any good numbers of fish. You will see smaller groups of fishing on the move throughout the system, but they are moving, and hard to get a cast to before they have moved on. Below the area where the weir is located, (about a mile above the landing) is full of bright Sockeye’s heading up river, also a good number of Kings, but with the season being closed for kings, all you can do is look, and release any incidental catches. Anyway, here are the pics from the Johnston’s last stand.

Well these four guys can't get enough. As a guide for Yakutat Lodge, I have seen a lot of types of fisherman, but these guys are great. They are fisherman, not people that just go fishing. We caught a ton of fish today, and I have the pleasure of taking them for the next two days. Another one of the Yakutat Lodge guides (John),has been teaming up with me in the last couple days, and I can't say enough good stuff about him. With John and I joining forces, these fish don't have a chance. I like to use the line, "Let's catch every thing in this hole, and leave it empty", well with over 500 hundred fish in the hole, this maybe a stretch, but we put a big dent in them. Also I caught a large king on my fly rod today, and the got a great release vid of this giant. This king was only 2 minutes out of the ocean, and looks like he had a scrape with an otter on the way in. Here are the pics, and the vids.. Enjoy,,,,,,, More to come. All pics are of different fish.

Father Gordon in Town

The last couple of days I have had the pleasure of taking the best client I could have. Father Gordon was my first client I guided here at Yakutat Lodge. Every year since that, I have taken Father Gordon down the river. It is a pleasure to have him return every year, and his partner (Burt), is also a great pleasure to have in the boat, and at the lodge. I hope to have many more years with the two of them. I did not get a lot of pics of the two, (Because the fishing was to good to take the time for pics), so here are the few I did get, and a vid also from today.

The area that we fish on the river is black with fish, and the fishing is great. Here are some good pics and vids from the last couple trips.

Amanda’s First Sockeye

07 Sunday Jun 2009

Last night Amanda and I got the chance to get out and do some fishing. Of course if you don’t know, Amanda is my Fiancé’, and the lead Bartender at the Yakutat Lodge, which the Lodge I guide for also. We went with our friends, (Eddie and Adrianna). We had about three hours to fish, and the fishing was fairly decent. We were able to finish up with seven fish to the bank, in the mouth. Sockeye are the only Salmon that I know, that just don’t want to bite very often. A process of lining them is needed allot of times, to get good results. We had some aggressive fish, when we first started out, but it became a lining thing at the end. We probably landed around 20 fish between us, with only the seven being legal keepers. So here is the fish porn for the day. I almost don’t like calling it fish porn when it’s Salmon, and not Steelhead, but some like this kind of porn also. So here you go.

Good luck out there.
