Great fishing is still the word for Yakutat Lodge

Well the Sockeye are in the river, and the halibut in the ocean are biting, and also the kings in the bay are on the bite. All species are on the attack, and it’s time to show them who is boss around here. I have been out a few times this last week, but the Sockeye were still in the lower mile of the system. So this meant that we had to row for 13 miles, to be able to fish the last one. This is a bit of a grind, and those who have seen the river already, would prefer to just walk up to the fish, but the rain hit two days ago, and just finally stopped today. If the past shows us anything, this means that the Sockeye should have made a hue push up river. The Steelhead are virtually out of the picture now, and it looks like our final count may be under 6,500. That is pretty low from what I have seen in the past 10 years at the Yakutat Lodge.  Also I have been given the news that the King fishing is open in the river as of right now, and they will determine if it will stay open depending on the numbers through the weir. So far there have been some Kings already passing through the weir. I have some pics from the last couple times I went down, also some Halibut and Ling Cod pics.

Keller’s and Leary’s Steelhead

Well the Steelhead are on their way out of the system, and are stacking up in the lower holes of the Situk. There are now about three holes that are holding around 300 fish, and a big school of a couple hundred just at the the weir. The females are on the bite big time right now, but they are still Steelhead, and sometimes they just won’t co-operate. With the Keller group, I just fished them above the forest service cabins / airstrip, (About 3 miles down river) and then I got into a plane and went to the Situk lake for the rest of the day, with other’s from the Keller group. We got two nice Steelhead at the top end, and then caught tons of Dolly Varden and Rainbow trout at the lake. Here are some pics from that day.

Paul and Clancy have graced the site many times in the past, and they were back for more. On the day we headed down the river, the sun was shining, and it was way to bright for the fish. We pounded the river hard all the way down for 11 miles. Finally we came across a real nice group of about fifty fish, and proceeded to pound on these fish with everything we had, and nothing. I could not take it anymore, and I said “Ok guys, it’s time to pull out the plugs!”. Well that was the ticket. In less than an hour, we hooked up with 14 fish, and landed 6 of them. That was the ending we needed to hard fished day. Overall we had a great time, and the finish was the best for all of us. I will see them again next year I am sure. Here are the pics.

Another great group of guys to fish with. Internet is still down most of the time, so the posting will continue to be sporadic until that is fixed. The kelts are everywhere now, and the bite seems to be picking up a bit now. Water temps are good, but low and clear conditions are still hurting the fishing. Season is closing up, and the Sockeye are starting to show up in the river. Reports the other day, said a group came in, but then turned back around and went back out. Any day now it will hit hard, and the fishing will be good again. See ya all soon.

Situk lake

Well Situk lake did not completely live up to it’s former glory, but it still produced some great Steelhead, Rainbows, and Dolly Varden. The early spring caused the winter Steelies to head out earlier than normal this season. With out the ice on the lake, they felt the sun and got down fast. The spring fish on the other hand, came in early because of the early spring, and shot right up to their spawning grounds. So the lake suffered from all this early movement. The fish just did not stay up there long enough to really get into them good. Here are some great pics though from the times that did work out.

This are a couple of great guys. We have had a blast over the last four days, with one day reaching nearly 25 hookups. Fishing is of and on right now, but the water is in good shape, and the fish are plentiful, just not always willing to bite. Having a great time at Yakutat Lodge.

Ok I don’t what to say about this. I have never managed people like this, and it is a bit tougher than I thought it would be. The new guides are good people, and two of them have many years in the fishing and guiding industry. One is green through and through, but reminds me of myself when I got started. I think this is going to be a great season. Looks like the new guys have it dialed in, and the clients will be very happy with their experience . Here are the pics from the last 3 days out with the newbie’s. You will notice than I am holding most of the fish. That is just because I caught more  HA HA HA……

Brian and I second trip out!

The internet has been out for a couple days, so here is the next day we went down the situk. We killed them yesterday. The fishing is real good right now, and I think we got into over 40 fish between Brian and I. We did not get that many to the bank though. The fish here are real hot this year, and the 20% landing ratio that claim is in effect for this river, really showed up yesterday.  I think we landed around 10 to 12 fish, and had many to the net, before they shook loose. Here are the pics and hopefully some vids.

First float, and it was a great day 2

After getting our work done on the Lodge’s tent camp, Brian and I got busy hunting down Steelhead on the Famous Situk river. Water levels are perfect for floating as of right now, and the fish numbers seem to be better than the last couple of years. Water temp is good, and not to much deep snow on the banks, (So the campers should be happy this year). We saw over20 fish yesterday, and got into about 20. These fish we were hooking up with, were hot fighters. We were only able to bring 4 to the boat, but we did get some great video. I got into my last fish after the light had left the sky. As we were coming to the landing, I saw a little wake at the top of the water and took a cast. You can see the results in the pic, and also I got caught with real goofy look on my face. We saw both Spring and winter fish in the river, so that is a good sign that we are looking at more fish earlier on this year. Instead of waiting until May to show up they are here now. Here are the pics and the vids.
