I have not been able to post for awhile. The Silvers are moving up the river now, and the pinks are still in the way. The pink run this year is well over a million strong. They have become more of a hassle than they are worth. Every cast in the river now, is a snagged pink. You can’t avoid them for nothing. I hate them this year. While trying to catch Silvers, you have to pick through about 20 pinks for every one Silver. There is a reprieve in site though, the lower river is full of bright Silvers, and they are starting to fill up in the upper holes. Silvers and Halibut galore!!!  The Salt water has really come to life this season, and the Silvers are practically jumping in the boat. I was out yesterday with captain Ken, captain Dave, and Amanda. We spent less than 2 hours fishing, and we were able to land 16 Silvers, two halibut, and 2 Ling cod. Not bad for 2 hours, including run time to and from the area. Here in Yakutat, the Silver grounds are only 10 minutes from the harbor. In this area, even the people who are prone to sea sickness, can get out and fish. I am one of those that gets sick, and I have been out for Silvers now 7 times with no ill effects. I still don’t think I could do the 6 miles out for the big Halibut, but the Silvers are no problem. Weather has been beautiful for the last couple of days, so we are taking advantage of it. The Silver salmon are here from the end of July, all the way through mid Sept. If you have been looking for a place to go for Silver Salmon with out a big crowd, come on up to Yakutat Lodge and see what you are missing. This halibut weight in right around 42 pounds, (Even though the sign says 327), and was 93 inches long. Great job captain Dave!!

  I just want to say one more time. If you can come to Yakutat, now is the time. The town is quiet, yet the fish are more than plentiful. Sockeye’s are everywhere, Pink Salmon are coming in thick, and the Dolly’s and Jack Salmon are attacking spinners. For the best fishing in South East Alaska, come up here and hook up with the best fighting Salmon in the world, and you will feel like you own the 14 mile stretch of river you will drift down.

Get a hold of Ken or Kip Fanning, at Yakutat Lodge, and let them know you want to come up and catch fish. The next three weeks are going to be great fishing for kids. If you know a kid that really wants to get into fishing, then the pink salmon are the way to go. You can catch them one after another. Let’s get the next generation pumped up on fishing!!

You can’t ask for better clients in the boat. I had the pleasure of fishing with this couple on three different occasions this last week, and everyday was a great one. The underwater king video’s were all from the time I was with them. Jim and Kristin are both good fly fisherman, and Jim learned that a spinning rod can sometimes be your best friend. While fishing the last day, Kristin caught the majority of the Sockeye needed, and did it all on the fly rod. While Jim struggled a bit the last day on the fly rod, he came to life when the spinning rod came into play. He must have landed 20 Dolly Varden, a couple Jack Salmon, and two large Kings. Kristin also caught a large King on her fly rod while fishing for Sockeye. These are the days that make guiding worth it for me. Two great clients, a bunch of fish, and the weather was not to awful for us. It was a lot of fun, and the memories of these great fish will be with me until next year, when I hope they come back for round 2.

Well as you all know by now, the Internet connection here is not all that good this year. So I am putting together a weeks worth of pics and vids together in this one post. The fishing is really good now, and the Pink Salmon are starting to show up in the lower river. This only means that the Silvers will be right on their tail fins. The amount of Sockeye entering the river is still staggering. The evening tides have brought in real good number from what I have observed in the boat. I have been on the river nearly everyday for the last 2 weeks, so I believe what I am seeing is correct. The King season is still closed, and will surely remain that way for the rest of the run. Even though we are not targeting Kings, there have been some incidental catches along the way. While throwing small spinners for Jack kings, (Any King Salmon under 20”), Dolly’s, and Pink’s, we have been lucky enough to have some large want to play the game. I was able to get some great underwater video’s of these monsters taking line, and making wakes. Hope you enjoy it all. Well last week I would have said this is the best place in AK to fish right now, but then the rain hit, and now the fish are shooting up river in a hurry. The water is on the drop, and I do expect it return to the good fishing we had, but it may be three or four days out. Hope to have better report in a couple of days.

You could not ask for better fishing right now anywhere in Alaska. The fish are coming in big numbers, and they are pushing up the river at a good pace. If you are familiar with the place, then you will understand when I say, “Holy crap there are alot if fish at nine mile bridge!”. I think there are at least 1,500 to 2,000 thousand just in this one hole. Below the weir is “Sick” with fish. The water is boiling on every incoming tide. The King season is still closed, but I have seen big numbers in the last week, on the incoming tides. I have not seen that many above the weir though. Any incidental catches of Kings should be released unharmed if possible. Please don’t fight the fish till it is exhausted. Bring them in quick if you can, or just cut the line and let them go. The more kings we can save now, will enhance the system in the future. If you are cleaning your fish at the river, Please make sure you throw the carcasses and scraps all the way out into the main stream. If you don’t, then the bear you deal with the next time will be your doing. There is a 2 year old and larger bear working the area around the bridge, so please watch how you handle your catch, and don’t fight the bear for the fish, just let them have it if you are confronted. If you see the bears coming, then put your catch away immediately and stay away until the bear moves on. If you are fighting a fish, and a bear is coming towards you, then cut the line and walk away. Ok if you can stand to put up with this one, then you may see what you are looking for. I put my camera on the end of the line on my fly rod, and cast into the middle of a school of Sockeye. I got some real good shots, even though the current made it hard to get it steady. At one point I got it perfect on the bottom facing up, but I thought it was upside down, so i screwed it up trying to get it right. You will see that I pull it up at one point. I was done filming, when my buddy hooked one. So I threw the camera back in, but the knot to the camera had come loose when I brought it in the boat. So you will see the camera fall to the bottom and hit sand. It took about five minutes to retrieve it with a hook at the end of the fly pole. i removed most of this time in the video, but you will see what I mean. All in all I think it is not to bad. Tell me what you think. I am going to try to get some real good underwater Sockeye shot’s this season.

Well the Reds have hit hard this week, and they are all the way to the bridge already. Looks like it is going to be a great season. I start on the river tomorrow, with several trips in a row, so the post’s should start being updated more frequently. They had a 327 pound Halibut the other day, “One big fish!”. Kings closed in the fresh water as of last night at 12:00 am, so that’s it for now in the river, but the bay is still producing Kings. We had a little rain the last couple days, so the water level is great for floating, and the clarity is perfect.Here are some great pics from the river and from the Ocean.

Halibut fishing has been great so far this year!
