Blood in the water!!!

Well all those fisherman downstream the last couple of days, probably noticed the red tinge in the water. That was all the blood being spilled out up above. Between my two friends and I, yesterday we got into 8 fish in about 3 hours. Today I got two fish in less than 15 minutes, and then it died, and we left at 11:15. Then a friend of mine called to tell me that the fish moved  in good throughout the afternoon today. Here are the pics from the last two days.

Frozen Fish anyone?

As you can guess, the river I fished today, was almost froze over. Eagle Creek, today was cold, “very cold”. The fishing was not the goal once we reached the river. Just standing up, with 2 inches of built up ice on the bottom of our boots. We went in fast, but took forever to get out. Every step was a slip in the wrong direction. Even though the river had no fish, the temp. was low, and the water to clear, it was still an awesome morning. We had the creek to ourselves, and the scenery was fabulous. Ice is covering almost the entire creek in allot of spots, and a big lonely Beaver was swimming around in the frigid water. The Beaver was not bothered by us or our dogs, he seemed to be happy to see visitors this late in the year. Here are some pics I took from the creek today.

Good first day out!

Today I went out for the first time in weeks, and it was good. I went down to Eagle Creek, and although there were not a lot of fish yet, I was able to have a good time with the ones I found. I got into my first fish within ten minutes, and thought this was going to be a banner day. It turned out to be just a good one. I was able to hook up with three Steelhead, and one large Silver. I landed 2 of the Grey Ghosts, and also the Salmon. The river level is great, and the clarity is to die for. I spent about 6 hours on the river, and it looked as though the winter storms really cleared out the debris, that scattered it’s way throughout the stream from last year. Everything looks great, and I hope the season ahead will be great for all of us who fish this wonderful place.

Bot attack.

Well it seems as though a “Bot” has decided to attack my site. I don’t know what that is exactly, but I think we are good now. The spam should stop, but we can only cross our fingers for now. See ya soon. I am starting to fish at the beginning of the week. I feel sorry for those fish.

The big day for me!!!

Well I know this is not fishing, but I have to let my readers know. I am getting married on Saturday the 14th of Nov. If any of you want to watch the event live, or within 24 hours after, then you will need to goto www.littlechapel.com and click on guests, then Aaron and Amanda Shook. Hope you all can watch if you want to. Here is a pic of a nice Steelhead from the season. This fish was 44″ long and had a 22″ girth. Weight about 27 Lbs.

Well this just sucks!!!

Every year when I get home, I am in a funk about the low quality of fish in Oregon. I know that the fish I am after here, have been in the system longer, and the water levels are lower, but come on. I have seen thousands of fish in the last couple of days, and only one bright one in the midst.

I was able to get into a nice little native Steelhead at the coast, also the one bright Silver, and I lost 2 really large Chinook, (They were black though). I just want to bitch about it, until the Steelhead arrive.

I am getting married soon, and hopefully this will not put a crimp in my fishing time. I don’t think it will, but if you don’t hear from me anymore after the 14th of Nov., then please someone put a memorial for me at the birthday hole, on Eagle Creek. Those of you who fish it with me, will know where I am talking about. Hopefully she won’t let me fish when I first come home from Yakutat, cause all I do is complain about coming to a State with nasty old Silvers, and Fall Chinook that fall apart when you land em’. Bitch, Bitch I know, but what else can I do, the fishing sucks for fresh fish right now.

If anyone out there can tell me where the Steelhead are available right now, with a fly rod, hopefully some place to spot fish.

I just need some good fish to catch, and I am not traveling all the way to NY Donnie. See ya all soon, I will be fishing this week, but I only expect pics of black or red fish.

Here are the pics from the coast, and a couple older colorful fish, from Eagle Creek.

Last days on the River!!!

It’s over for the season, and as I leave again for another 6 months, I look back at all the good times that I had. The fishing was great throughout the entire year, and the co-workers this year, for the most part were great. There were some that came and went, but here at the Lodge, we strive to only keep the best of the best. That is what we had by the end of the year, and we are hoping to see the return of most of this group. I can not say enough about the staff here at the Yakutat Lodge, so thanks for all the good times, and the memories. My photographer, was not available that much this season, and I am hoping to get some good Steelies in the air next year, and possibly this winter. From the snow in April, the sun in June and July, to the wind and storms of September, I love it all, and will be returning to Yakutat Lodge for some time to come. I want to say Thanks to Ken Fanning,(Owner), Kip Fanning,(Owners Son), and the newest members of the management team, Dan and Hope Anderson, now in their second year here. They worked hard this year to keep up good service through a tougher economy this year. Next year will be even better. The fishing will always be good, but the service will be great. We are rebuilding, and improving this next few years. There will be new facilities at the bay, and also a completely new experience at the Fanning’s on the Bay house, where you will have one on one service, private chef’s, and fully guided trips of your choice daily. Call up to get a brochure mailed to you, or to ask about information. Also you can visit www.Yakutatlodge.com for more info. Call 1-907-784-3232 or toll free at 1-800-YAKUTAT. See ya next season. Back in Oregon, getting married in Las Vegas on November 14th. Hope to be able to update during this time. Will be in Mexico also in Nov. where I will be fishing rooster fish. Look for the pics.

The Baker Group

Another husband and wife combo today. Again, the wife out did the husband, almost 2 to 1. The morning started out real slow. The rain last night, brought the water level up, almost 3 feet, so the slow water we were fishing, was now no longer available. All the guides today started out slow, and then we figured out where the fish would be, and it was on. In the one hole that we really stuck with, they were able to hook more than 40 fish, and they brought 31 to the boat. This was all within 2.5 hours. The fish were very aggressive today, and on the move. Large numbers of fish were pushing up with the new height in water. The fishing is just going to get better every day. Here are the pics, and a great vid, of a very aggressive Silver attacking a jig, right at the boat. Watch how many time this Silver turns around to take the Jig.
