Today I ventured out with a friend of mine, that I had met at Eagle creek about 7 years ago. We floated a well known river here in the Portland Oregon, and the river did not disappoint. We spent the first hour or so working our way down to the fish. After arriving at the predetermined spot, we started throwing out our bobber and jig set ups. At first it was a bit different for me, not fishing with anything but a fly rod for so long, pitching a bait caster was something I thought I may have some trouble with to start, but everything went fine from the first cast. We hooked up with four nice Steelies, having to release two, because they possessed a full adipose fin, making them a (“Native fish”?)?????. which must be released immediately unharmed. I got some pics of the fish we did keep, and here they are. Also one pic from Eagle creek. Got this one on Sunday, on the creek.

Silver Bullets are starting to show in the upper creek now. I have seen a slow rise in the number of fish on a daily basis. My hook up ratio to fish spotted has been almost 100%, but the landing ratio has needed a little help. I have been able to hook up with 22 fish in the last 4 days, but only four have come to the camera lens to get a pic. I am hoping that the fishing this year will be getting better on a daily basis. The fish are not to big yet, and the early ones that have been in the system for awhile do have a little color showing up on them. They still have all there fight though. I was into about a twenty pound female yesterday, that taught me the meaning of power. She tore me up and then spit me out at the last possible second, after a half mile run down river. When I finally caught up to this fish, she turned, looked at me, and promptly spit my hook back into my face. Oh well I will get her tomorrow.

Well they said the snow was over, and now they say, another 3″ on the way before Christmas. So there is no way to get to the fishing designation right now, so I have been having fun in the snow with Amanda and the dogs. Here are some pics from our back yard, and also a video of our snowman. We hollowed him out and put lights inside for effect. It looks real good in person, the video is a little grainy. Also he is singing his own personal song.

                 To those who read this on a continuous basis, I am getting together the best of the best for 2008. Much like I did for the 2007 season when I first started this site. Give me a few days and I will have it put together. Also, it won’t include the Winter Steelhead I will catch before the end of the year, but I will still be featuring those fish as they are caught. Just a few days!!.

I will be back in a few days with fishing pics. 

                 We had some visitors from Yakutat Lodge last week. A few of our co-workers came through and stayed with us for a few days. We spent time at Multnomah Falls and along the Columbia river Gorge. We also went to the Bonneville dam and took a look at the Sturgeon and the Rainbow trout they have there in big feeding ponds.   Well the coast was the venue again today, and it did not let me down. Although the fishing was good today, the hooking was also good, but my landing ratio went way down today. I hooked up with two fish right off the get go, and promptly lost them both, one of them being a Steelhead. Today I had along for the ride, a fly fisherman by the name of Doug. I met Doug while fishing Eagle creek last winter. Doug moved here from Arizona last year, and is getting acquainted to fishing bigger fish. Doug has been fishing for Trout most of his life, but I will try to convert him to the “dark side”, (“Winter Steelhead Fishing”).  Doug belongs to the Clackamas Fly Fishers club, a very well established group of fly fisherman, dedicated to preserving the species, and teaching or learning the art of Fly Fishing for Steelhead and Salmon. Today Doug had a bit of a slow start. While I was hooking fish, Doug was unhooking from the bottom. After I hooked up with about 6 or 7 fish, 3 for sure being Steehead, and landing two Steelhead, and losing the rest, I left the hole to Doug. I went just below him, and hooked 2 more fish. I lost both of them, one being a very large Chinook. I then headed on down river a couple hundred yards and let Doug have to entire area. About 15 minutes later I hear a holler from upstream, and Doug is holding a massive Chinook Salmon, the biggest Doug has ever landed on a Fly rod. We got some great pics of this behemoth. Also a great shot of the one Steelhead thathung around long enough to have it’s picture taken. Another great trip to the Oregon coast, and the Trask River.

I took another trip to the Oregon coast today, and the results, although slower, were great. Matt and I fished the same run that Steve and I had fished 2 days before. The fish seemed to have congregated in the deeper holes, and the sun was making them alittle spooky. I was able to land 3 big Chinook, although they were all fairly dark, they still put up a great fight on the fly pole. The Silvers seem to be alittle less willing to bite, but we were able to get into a few nice ones. Here are some pics, and a Video of Matt landing a nice Silver on his fly rod. He was using some rubber eggs, they seem to work well for him today. There is also another video embedded in this video. After watching the first video, there will be a choice of related video’s. In the second video, Titled “Rock Slider”, I show the route a fish took when I hooked it. This fish took three jumps right at me, and then landed on the rock (“Three feet above the water”), slide down the rock and into the pool behind me in the rocks. Crazy fish. Enjoy.

Well as I promised, here are some pics from the last day on the Situk. These two guests of the Yakutat Lodge, were great guys to fish with. Although the one gentlemen with the ugly stick in his hand, started out alittle skeptical, he finally came around and caught a ton of fish in one day. These guys really were alot of fun to fish with, and I hope to hear from them again soon, hopefully next Silver season for sure.
