Shrum’s

What a great group of guys the Shrum’s are. This group has been visiting Yakutat Lodge now for several years. One member could not make it this year, and I would just like to say to Clairance, (We missed you this year, and we are all hoping everything works out, and we look forward to seeing get into some big fish next season). The fishing is still excellent, and the fish just keep on coming up. Here are the pics from my 2 days with the Shrums.

Husband and Wife (Holly and Ron)

Another great day on the Situk River. The fish are just everywhere at this point, and a push of new fish in the last couple of days, has really given’ us some great fishing on the lower 2 miles of the river. The big males are showing up now, signifying the peak, and start of the end of the run this year. The big spawning males are usually the last to show up in the river, and they are the fighters most fisherman are looking for. These big males are very aggressive, and very strong. Randy, (One of the lodges long standing guides), brought in a nice 17.8 pound male yesterday, and I have seen some of the big hawgs in the system the last couple days. These new fish, will sustain the run through the end of the month, giving fisherman a good shot at landing large numbers of fish on a daily basis. If you are coming up, please spend the time to talk to one of the Yakutat Lodges guides, to find out exactly what the fish are biting on, and also just for the knowledge of where the fish are running and being caught. Here are the pics from today.

Clients of Yakutat Lodge, that are floating the river, are getting up to 60 fish a day, to the boat. That’s good fishing!!. Here are the pics from the last 4 days. The pics are of the Vorpahl group, that includes, Tom, Willie, Ken, and Bob. The Fallon group, whom have been visiting us for many years now. This is the husband wife (Marty and Bob) in the pic with the big Silver. Also the Hench group. Here are the pics. Where are you Annes revenge??

Good luck out there.

Father and son combo

Today the rain fell, but the fish were on the bite. We had a good size storm the last couple of days, and we had to cancel some trips because of the blow downs. (Blow downs are trees that fall across the river, because of high winds. We have cleared the river now, and the fishing can continue on. I had a father son combo today, and they did a great job getting some nice size Silvers to the boat. Zane (The son) was able to hook up and land his biggest fish ever today, with absolutely no help except the netting. Great job Zane!!.

The fishing is just as good as ever, and the peak is still a week away. I will say it again, if you can come up to fish, then get here as soon as possible. Call the lodge at 1-907-784-3232, and talk to Hope and Dan, for more information. You can also visit Yakutatlodge.com to get prices on packages. Here are the pics.

Two guides, One boat

Today I was given a day off, and I took full advantage of it. John and I, got into the boat at 7:00 am, and fished till dark. At the end of the day, the total count was 89 Silvers to the boat, Not including the ones that got away. I was able to get 69 of them on film. I tried to get a pic of all of them, but the action was just to fast at times. The Situk river is having a great run of Silvers this year. The weather has been pleasant so far, and I am hoping this will continue. If you want a great Alaskan experience, then come on up to Yakutat Lodge in the next 3 weeks.

Here are the pics.

Two great days of fishing.

Another fly out, produces bunches of fresh Silvers. The Italio river is producing several fish, per fisherman, every day. The Italio river is a fly fisherman’s dream river. With the average height only being 2 feet at low tide, and the fish willing to strike flies, it is the perfect set up for novice, as well as seasoned fly fisherman. Top water polly wogs, are very effective also on this river. When using top water wogs, you want to strip the wog across the water, causing some disturbance at the surface. Watch the wog carefully, for sometimes the strike is not a strike at all, but the fish simply sucks in the wog from underneath. If you are lucky, you will see the fish charging the wog, and witness first hand, the explosive take at the surface of the water. Your best bet for constant fly rod action, is to strip black and pink articulated leaches. Silvers can’t help but to strike these flies, as they move through the water.

Fillet O’ Fish

A Strange group from last season, came back to Yakutat Lodge for more abuse. The fishing in the ocean was good for them, and the river was great also. Silver salmon are in the fresh water in good numbers, and the ocean is producing some nice Silvers, and real nice Halibut and Ling Cod. The rock fish are also on the bite, with some real nice yellow eyes being caught.

Not to many pics today, but good ones. The silvers are from the float with Glenn and Norm. (Two great guys to fish with!). The Halibut are from today on the ocean with Ken and Dave as the captains.

Return of the Newcomb’s

Fishing is just getting better and better every day. The Silvers this season are nice, fat, and big. The number of fish has probably doubled in the last week. Every tide is now bringing in large numbers of Silvers, and still groups of Pink Salmon. Black jigs and spinners are the best bet for these awesome fish. I will say it again, if you can get here in the next couple of weeks, then do your best to get here. The fishing is just going to get better every day from now until the middle of October.
