Finally a day off!

Well today I had the day off the river, so I went fishing. I was able to hitch a ride with a friend of mine that has a jet boat. We headed out from Yakutat Lodge about 6 am, and we were into fish as soon as we stopped. Another Fisherman with us today, hooked up with the first Silver Bullet within seconds of stopping the boat, and then hit another four or five within minutes, and got 1 to the boat. I got into 2 here, 1 of which I landed. The next stop produced about 7 bites, but no landed fish. Then the rest of the day was mine. I was able to hook up with over 20 fish, and land 10 of these Chromers. I lost a good amount of fish today, but in my defense, I think they were all big pigs. I don’t break fish off very often, but today 3 of these giants broke the fly right off. They had to be over 15 lbs apiece. I got some great underwater releases today, and some good pics as well. The river is in good shape. Temperature is still down in the 30’s, but the snow on the banks is gone, and so the water should start to warm up here real soon. Although the Steelhead season for cliental is almost over, there are still plenty of fresh fish entering the system, and the winter fish are just starting to fall back in good numbers. I think the Steelhead will be available through the entire month of May, and well into June, when the Sockeye’s start to show. The weir is just days away from completion, so the Steelies are going to start to stack up in the holes for about a mile above the weir. They will soon all be fall back fish, and should in essence be left alone to do there return to the salt. So although there may be large amounts of fish left in the system, it is best to let these fish rest and go back home, so we can get them five pounds larger next season.

Here is the fish porn and vids for the day. Included are a few cut throat I caught last night.

Today was a good day on the river. I was with a 2, of a group of eight that came to Yakutat Lodge to do some good fishing. So all four of the guides will be busy for the next couple days. Hopefully the fishing will continue to be decent. We left a bit late, but that did not seem to hurt anything. We got into 8 fish, and landed 5 of these beauties. Here are the pics, and a release vid from today.

The bite seemed to be a bit better today. We had to make a quick trip, to get the clients back for the plane, so it was a short day. We got into 7 fish, and landed 4. If we would have had the entire day to fish, we would have done much better. For the 3 hours we fished, it was pretty darn good.

Here is the fish porn for the day.

Another day where the fish just don’t want to cooperate. We got into 6 fish, and landed two. The two guests of the Yakutat Lodge, that I had today, were a great couple of guys from Galveston Texas. They were good fisherman in their own right, and did real well with the wood and the snags. 3 of the fish were on fly pole, and one of these were landed. Here are the pics from today, and also a good release video.

Today was the slowest start of the season so far. We fished the top half of the river real hard today, with no strikes at all. The water was real cold this morning, and the fish were not on the bite. By the time we got half way down, I was worried that we were not going to get a fish today. We kept at it hard, until we hit the 3 mile mark, and then it happened. We rolled onto a nice group of fish laying up under a tree. When we came upon them, they shot out from the tree, and went into a nice little run perfect for fishing. We got into 6 fish here, with none to the boat. After this pod ran dry, we headed to the clay bank hole, and it happened again. This time we hit into another 6 fish, but this time we got one to the boat. This was Dave’s first Steelhead ever. After fighting with 5 of these beauties, he was able to bring one to the boat. A nice spring fish, with a great fight in it. Here is the pic from today, and also another underwater vid for you fish porn lovers. See ya all tomorrow.

The internet has been down for a few days, so I need to make up some time. The Yakutat Lodge client I was with today, is a returning client for the last several years. We had a tough day on the river. Struggled just to find a hole to fish. With the campers, the other drift boats, and the Jet boats, we were sent 12 miles of the 14 before finding a hole to cast in. After all the hours of frustration, we finally found some fish. We hooked up with 5, and brought one to the boat. Here is the pic, and also a pic from another fisherman on the river, that I was able to assist in landing his fish, (By giving him a net and a glove to handle the fish with). So here they are.

Well Tim and Bill had a great trip, and I will see them for Steelhead at the Yakutat Lodge again in two years. Bill will be returning for Silvers next September. Yesterday was a slow day with only one fish brought to the boat, but today made up for it, with 7 fish to the boat. Too tired to write much, but I will say the sun sucks, and the clear water could go away anytime. Here is the fish porn for the last two days. Also a couple release vids for you.

Another 3:30 am launch for me today. We have been launching the boat in the dark the last 2 days, to beat the sun. During Steelhead season, the worst enemy you can have, is the sunshine on the water. The Situk river runs low and clear during Steelhead season, and the sun turns these fish into iron traps. Their mouth won’t even open to breath. So the last couple days we have left early enough to beat the sun to the first couple holes. It has paid off, with several more hookups in the morning than previously done. We go into several fish today, and put 6 to the net. Here are the pics and a nice release vid from today.

It got going today allot better than the last week. The little bit of rain we got yesterday brought the water up just enough to get the fish on the bite. We left the Yakutat Lodge parking lot at 6 am and headed out to nine mile bridge. We stopped in the peanut hole, and brought one fish to the boat within the first ten minutes. After this first stop, it seemed like it was going to be the same as the last week, just one or two fish for the day. Then we stopped in a little run next to fallen tree and pulled up on the bank to relieve ourselves. During this time Tim cast a clown fart in next to the tree and hooked up right away. So we stayed and got into another real nice fish, both of which got away. After this we started stopping at all the fallen tree's. One more spot was productive, and we landed a nice chromer. Then we pulled into a nice deep hole just above the weir, and in less than an hour we got into 7 fish, and put four on the bank, including two 36" bucks. That topped off the day in a great way, and after this we headed to the landing with smiles and hopes for tomorrow being even better.

Here is the fish porn of the 6 we brought in, and a few underwater releases for you.
