Today our fill in guide, (Rick Barrow’s) is leaving us. Rick was filling in for Jack Walker, who has been the long standing lead guide here at the Yakutat Lodge . Jack will be returning to duty shortly, and back on the ores before the end of the season.
Rick was a great guide, and just a great guy to be around, we will miss him.
Anyway, back to the fishing. Rick’s son Matt has been here for the last 4 days, and they have fished their butts off. I was able to grab some pics from them to show you all. Also a pic of a giant Glacier bear spotted on the river. This bear is definitely unique to what we are used to seeing around here. Enjoy the pics, and again, sorry to see you go Rick, hope to see you back in September for the Silvers.
Glacier Bear!!
Good luck out there.

That time of year has arrived again. The Steelhead season is over, and the Sockeye are just starting to show up in good numbers. Although last year was a bust on Sockeyes, this year is shaping up to be a real good one. The river is full of new Salmon arriving every day. I floated down with another one of the guides, and the cook here at the Yakutat Lodge, two days ago, and we did very well. Also along the way we did see what seemed to be hundreds of fresh Sockeyes in almost all the holes, from half way down. After guiding here at the Yakutat Lodge for the last 7 years, and working here for the last nine, I still never get tired of seeing that wake in the water, made by the seemingly endless number of fish that come in with the tides. The lower end was just boiling with fish the other day. The town of Yakutat is nearly void of fisherman this time of year, and if anyone could get the chance to get here within in the next week or so, you could really have a great time with the Sockeye, and have the river to yourselves. Although there maybe more fisherman coming in daily, this year has started early, so if you can get here quick, I would say now is the time. Back to Steelhead. Even though the season has ended, does not mean that there are not some nice fish still in the system. Although many of these Steelies are downstream fish, (Meaning they have already spawned, and are on their way back to the salt), there are still late spring fish coming up through the weir. On the float, all three of us were able to get into, and land some nice Steel. I had a good 7 hookups, and landed 3, the other guys, (Jake (the guide), and Gary (the cook)), each hooked and landed a nice Steelhead. We also got into some great fighting Sockeye. Hope to see some of you make it early for the Sockeye. Also included is a pic of the art work now being displayed on my boat. All of those who have had me as your Yakutat Lodge guide, will understand, and probably laugh real good when you see this one.
Good luck out there.

Today the bite just stopped. We had overcast skies, and rain, but no help at all. I think these fish are just wanting to go home and rest up. The females will usually bite real good, but not today. We were able to get into some nice Sockeye, on the lower end, in the same hole they have been in. There are fewer now!! (I wonder who's fault that is) Ha Ha. Slaying them. Anyway, we got nice Steelie today, and three sockeye, so the day was not to bad at all. Also including a pic of the Managers of Yakutat Lodge a Falcon that was feasting on a nice Rainbow trout, he obviously plucked from the river.
Good luck out there

I had to go down and deliver some gear to Yakutat Lodge the tent camp yesterday. After the job I fished a little bit. Although I did not take pics of all the fish, because some were out of the boat, and I was by myself, so I just released them. I did have a great day though, and I got a limit of Sockeye at the bottom end. I don't know why, but I did not take pics of the Sockeye, probably because they are Salmon, and not STEELHEAD!!. So here are some pics and a vid.
Good luck out there

Well I am sure you have noticed no entries the last couple of days. My Photographer (Brian Woobank) is back at Yakutat Lodge for the next couple days, and we have been hitting it hard. The first night out, we took my boat out in the bay, and got a nice 75 LBS Halibut. The next day we headed up to the lake, and although it was slower than last year, we still got some great shots. Today we floated the Situk, and it was a pretty good day. We got some great shots, above and below water. Also some real good HD video. Hope you all like what you see. Here’s your fish porn.

Brian’s Ocean day!
Good luck out there.

Again today the sun beat down as we left the Yakutat Lodge, and the fish beat feet up under the brush. We did get a few in the morning, where the shade was still available, but afternoon just dropped off, and lockjaw took over. We fished groups of fifty or more, with not one biter, (and I mean we threw everything at them). That's Steelheading. We did get 3 to the net, only two took photo's, the third was shy and swam away early. One thing, I feel like I am being stocked on the river by a Moose. I never see more than one or two moose a year, today we saw three. One of the moose I believe is the same one that has been following me for the last week or so. I got some more good video of her, and some good release vids also.
Good luck out there.

Well I stayed off the river today and slept 12 hours. Feels good to be revived and ready for more. I did have another father son team yesterday, and we caught a few, but sunshine killed us for the most part. I put together all the vids that never made it to the site this year, and some pics from buddy’s back home on the clackamas. Hope you all enjoy them.
Good luck out there.

Well the last two days have been great. With over20 fish hooked, but only a handful to the net, it was just a great time. Rick had the hot hand for the trip, but just could not get the fish to the boat. Jim on the other hand, would hook just a few, but bring 90% to the boat. Rick was doing nothing wrong, just works out that way sometimes. The sun was on the water, but the temp has gone up, and the snow has melted away from the banks, creating a warmer river water condition. So the bite has improved greatly in the last couple days, and they are fighting much harder now than last week in the cooler conditions. The season for clients is coming to an end this week, but there are fresh fish entering the river every day now. Hope some of you can make it up for this late run of Silver Bullets.
Here is your fish porn for the day.
Good luck out there.

Well the sun is back, and the river is dropping, and clearing. First off in the morning was going great, then the sun came out, and the fishing slowed way down. We did however, get into 8 fish today, and many more bumps. We got 6 to the boat, but only five pics, one got away without a picture. I will be fishing with the Anderson’s for the next 4 days, so get used to seeing this father and son team with many nice fish. Here is your porn for the day, with a couple good vids.
