It’s time to get the season started. I went 0 for 9 till today. I missed 3, but got 2 to the bank in the end. I should be updating regular from here on out. I am going to be guiding this winter starting in Jan. (That is if I can stop fishing for a day and get my legal’s done). Also Tommy and Ed got into some nice ones last week. Here are some pics, hope to have even more tomorrow. Also a great video of Tommy fighting one out of a log jam.

Mexico trip I missed

12 Monday Nov 2012

Due to some badly torn ligaments and tendons in the old elbow this year, I had to cancel on the rooster fishing in Mexico this year. This would have been my first trip to fish for these absolutely beautiful fish. My time was spent here in Oregon trying to get Kings when I was not in too much pain to fish, while my buddy’s spent the week in Mexico catching some of the best fighting fish you can catch off the beach. Four wheelers are used to traverse about 5 miles of private beach where these rooster fish swim in chasing bait fish. When you see the panic reaction of the bait fish running and jumping on the surface of the breaks, you start casting in that direction. Using big plug like lures, you sling them out about 50 to 70 yards, and then start reeling like a mofo. I have been told the bite is tremendous, and the fight just as satisfying. If you don’t get the bite, then you jump on the four wheeler and keep searching the breaks for the next fish.

Here are some pics from the trip I should have been on. Nest year for sure.

Got some Chinook, Chums, and some Summer steel at the coast. Loving the boat this year, and hoping for a great Steelhead season. The posts should start flowing soon with Steel. Here are some pics from this month.

Hit up a nice little coastal river today with fair results. We went 4 for 7 on Chinook, and 1 for 1 on cutthroat. All in all not a bad day. The first King of the day came on the fly rod, and that was great to see.  Here are some pics from today, the rest of the fish are on video only, and hopefully more after tomorrow.

HIt up a little trout stream today.

Well I had to get out and do something fishing related, so I hit up a little trout stream in the mountains. We had a fairly good day, with three bows, and one beautiful summer steel. Here are a few pics from today. We were using 8mil beads under an indicator. I am still working on the end of the year post from AK, so look for it in the next couple days. The Fall nooks are on the way with this little rain we got today and what’s forecasted for the rest of the week. So look for good fishing on the Oregon coast this week. Also some video’s of Silvers in AK. You gotta see this one.

Silvers are really on the bite now!!!!

Today and yesterday were both stellar days on the river. We had a bit of rain the last couple days, and the water came up about a foot and the fish turned on big time. I don’t know the total count, but I know it was 10 to the boat today, and one guy has never fished…. ( he got 11). The other gentleman never fished fly rod before and got 2 on the fly and 7 on the jig. I got some shots of the jigs today, but I am hoping the get some great underwater vids this season with the Silvers striking the jig. Here are some pics from the last couple outings.

16 pound Silver

What a great day, with two of the best Yakutat Lodge clients I have ever had. Thelma who used to work here in the 90’s, and her Grandson Donovan (aka:Elton) were so much fun to be with. I have been with them three times now during there stay, and every day was better than the one before. The first day we limited on Sockeye and Dolly Varden. The second time out we limited on Sockeye and caught and released pinks all day. Today was the best. We left the Dolly’s and Sockeye alone and just went for a fun day with pinks, and a chance at an early Silver. Well the day started out with Elton hooking a big bright King that barely got away. Then came the hours of good Pink fishing. We got a limit of Pinks and released many, many more. During the Pink fishing, Thelma hooked a nice 20 pounder or so King, it also got away at the last minute. Then we headed down to try our hand at some Silvers. It is really early in the season, but the last couple of days we have had some mediocre results. Then all of a sudden we were on to a big boy. The fight was really uneventful because we were in tide water and the fish stayed down bullied it’s way to the boat, but when it hit the net I could not believe the size of this Silver. It was so fat, at first I thought King. After looking for just a second I could tell that we had a huge Silver. It weighed out at 16.1 pounds, and was just a great fish to bring in. We also got one other Silver, but it was only about 3 pounds. Here are the pics from the days out, and the Silver today of course.

We had a great day today on the Situk. After leaving Yakutat Lodge this morning, we headed up for what was suppose to be routine day on the water, little did I know we were going to hook over 100 fish. We started out with Sockeye and absolutely murdered them. I don’t know how many we landed, but it was a stupid number for sure. Then we hit up the Dolly Varden, and wow was it hot fishing. I know we hooked at least 100 Dolly’s. Then we went for Pink Salmon, and “Oh my God” did we ever get into them. Landed at least 50 each with three guys. Then just we we thought it was at it’s best, we ran into some early Silver’s coming in on the tide. We hooked up with four big boys, and got two to the boat. These were definitely bonus fish, as were the incidental Kings. Here are some great pics from the day, and a video to come later.

Glacier, then fishing.

Went out on the big boat to the Hubbard Glacier today, and it was great. I have never gone there before because I get sea sick pretty bad. Today they talked me into it and said it’s never rough out there. Well they were right, and the Glacier was more than I expected. After watching the Glacier calve for about an hour, we headed back and the guides got together to hit up the river for the evening, and we found about 50 fish in a couple hours that wanted to play. The lower end of the Situk if absolutely black with fish right now. Sockeye’s and Pink Salmon are coming in by the thousands. There are still Ocean fresh Kings coming in, and there are 7 Silvers over the weir already. This is going to an epic season if the weather holds for any time. Yakutat Lodge has a few openings in the next month, so if you are looking for some world class fishing, then let us know and we will get you into them. Goto Yakutatlodge.com for prices and info. Ask for Ken. Here are some great pics from today.
