Wow is all I can say.

We had a great day today on the Situk. After leaving Yakutat Lodge this morning, we headed up for what was suppose to be routine day on the water, little did I know we were going to hook over 100 fish. We started out with Sockeye and absolutely murdered them. I don’t know how many we landed, but it was a stupid number for sure. Then we hit up the Dolly Varden, and wow was it hot fishing. I know we hooked at least 100 Dolly’s. Then we went for Pink Salmon, and “Oh my God” did we ever get into them. Landed at least 50 each with three guys. Then just we we thought it was at it’s best, we ran into some early Silver’s coming in on the tide. We hooked up with four big boys, and got two to the boat. These were definitely bonus fish, as were the incidental Kings. Here are some great pics from the day, and a video to come later.

Glacier, then fishing.

Went out on the big boat to the Hubbard Glacier today, and it was great. I have never gone there before because I get sea sick pretty bad. Today they talked me into it and said it’s never rough out there. Well they were right, and the Glacier was more than I expected. After watching the Glacier calve for about an hour, we headed back and the guides got together to hit up the river for the evening, and we found about 50 fish in a couple hours that wanted to play. The lower end of the Situk if absolutely black with fish right now. Sockeye’s and Pink Salmon are coming in by the thousands. There are still Ocean fresh Kings coming in, and there are 7 Silvers over the weir already. This is going to an epic season if the weather holds for any time. Yakutat Lodge has a few openings in the next month, so if you are looking for some world class fishing, then let us know and we will get you into them. Goto Yakutatlodge.com for prices and info. Ask for Ken. Here are some great pics from today.

A few Dolly Varden

Well I don’t usually take pics of Dolly’s, but I did today, and thought why not share them. We did not get any of the big ones today, but quite a few 2 to 4 pounders. They are aggressive little char, with and appetite for spinners. We get them mainly on #3 blue fox spinners in pink or blue body color. Not many that come here to Yakutat Lodge fish for these type of Char, but today I had two of the employees from the lodge that had never even held a fishing pole before, so Dolly’s were the way to go. Here are the pics and a few Sockeye we got also.

Jack kings on the Situk.

Well the King season is closed, but the jacks are always available. Here on the Situk river, the Jacks are Kings that are 20” or under in length. Most years there is no problem getting these little Kings like crazy. This year had been a bit different. The limit of ten a day has been very tough to near impossible this year. The Jacks seem to know the length restrictions, and have out grown them by an inch or more. We have been using #3 and #4 Blue fox spinners to target these Jacks, and have been catching a lot, but just at 20 1/2” to 26”. Only 2 actual Jacks in the last three days, but tons of 21” to 23” Jacks that are just out of the legal range. With large King fishing closed for the season, it is inevitable that you are going to get some by-catch fish on accident. When we do hook one of these adult Kings, we attempt to slack line them and let them shake it loose, but that does not always work. So we have landed a few good size Kings also that were promptly released unharmed and undisturbed as much as possible. Here are some pics of all the barely over sized Jacks and a few my wife caught yesterday.

Sockeye’s Season is on Fire.

Several groups here at the Yakutat Lodge have experienced some of the best and biggest Sockeye in years. We are all getting 10 and 11 pound fish on a daily basis. The counts are not high, but the fish are hanging in the river, and making it a great fishery. Most of the days are seeing the clients getting limits by 10 am and then just having fun with Jack Kings and Dolly Varden throughout the system. The Jack Kings this year are huge, averaging about 4 pounds and exactly 20 inches. Great little kings for sure!. Here are pics from the last 2 weeks. I arrived back from vacation on the 8th of July, and have been on the river since I got off the plane. I will try to update more often from here on out.

Steelhead still around, and socks on the move

Well not much to say, except that the Steelhead are heading out and the Sockeye are heading in. Not a lot of either at the moment, but still getting into about 20 Steel a day, and the Socks at the bottom of the river. New guide Ian has enter the picture this week, and his first trip was a great success. Ian and I took a trip down the night he came in and we hooked up with about 20 Steelhead and some Socks at the bottom. Great time!!
