Went coastal

Tommy and I went down to meet up with someone for a day on a new river, but he was a no show, so Tom and I had to find something to do. We hit up a little creek that we have had success on so far this season. Again it produced for us. I was able to grab one real nice Steelie, and Tom went 2 for 2. His second fish was a puker. Brad “Halibuthitman” got it on film. Hope to see it soon.

Two rivers, 11 fish.

I am having way to much fun this year so far. The Steelhead are everywhere we go, and they are some of the most aggressive I have seen in years. I have been using the fly rod off the bank for the last week and a half, and have had very good success with hooking up, but the landing has been an issue. Today was more like it, with 7 out of 11 to the hand. Tom also hooked many fish and landed 4 nice ones. The water is dropping fast right now and clearing on a daily basis, making it more difficult to approach without being seen. We have changed out tactics a bit, going to indicators and small presentation just off the bottom so the fish do not have to travel to take the offering. It seems to be working well the last two days. The pics and video’s from today were great, and I hope you enjoy them.

Flymstr;

A great week in review!!

Wow is the only thing I can say at this point of the season. I have been out everyday but one since the first, and between me and my two buddy’s, we got into over 80 fish. I will be the first to admit that we got our butts kicked. With over 80 hooked you would think that several nice fish would have found their way onto the camera, but that was not to be. We figured out that only 15 found the bank, the others ran, jumped, freaked out, and shook the hooks. I don’t know what to say except these fish were hot. We went down to 6 pound test to get the strikes, and man did that ever do it. With several doubles and one triple, we could not have asked for a better beginning. Hope the rest of the winter is just as good. Here are some pics, some may be from the first day and be duplicates of the last post. Also a couple pics of a few great guys I met over the week.

A canyon full of chrome.

It has been a great couple days out on the water. Yesterday I continued my losing streak by farming my 12th fish with no results. Tommy on the other hand was killing them right next to me. He went 2 for 4, and I was 0 for 3. Today was a different story though. The morning started out real slow, with Doug being the only one to get into fish consistently. Then I got to talking to an older gentlemen that was there, and I got some real good hints for the day. Soon after I was hooked up and fighting one after another. I went 2 for nine today, Doug was 4 for ten, and poor Tommy came up empty, with 0 for 2. Also my buddy Anton got into a nice hatch fish and put it on the bank. We all walked out happy and content, “Except for Tommy” LOL.

New spot for me.

Hit up a new spot today that I have lived near but never made it to. Well I made it there this morning, and it paid off in a big way. The rivers are low and clear due to a lack of rain, and thus there is no pressure on the rivers at this time. We had miles of beautiful rive to ourselves today, and it was great. At one point I had 5 fresh winters pull up right in front of me in nice little white water riffle. I was so stunned I could not get a correct presentation, and the fish promptly left the area. At the end of the day, we had hooked up with 16 fish between 3 of us. I lost all 9 fish I got into, Tom landed 2, lost 1, and Ian hit into 4 and lost em’ all. He did land one old silver, and I talked one old summer to the bank. Here are the pics.

Nestucca one more time.

Hit up the coast waters again today and it went fairly well. We were able to get into 4 fish, and land 2, one native and one hatch Steel. The numbers of fish seem to be lower today than yesterday, but the bite was better for us. Tom and I had Ian (Arctic) along for the ride. Ian was the one that got three of the fish on and two to the boat. I did not fish much, but was able to get a hook up on a little pink jig. All in all it was a great day on the water with good friends. Thanks for going along Ian.

Jumping in the boat.

Well after several uneventful Salmon trips, the Steelhead have finally showed up. Today we kicked butt. I got it started with a nice Coho in the first ten minutes, and then a bit of a lull, then it was game on. I started out with a nice chrome native, still sporting  her fresh sea lice. Then Anton hit into two chrome cookie cutters. At this time Tommy had no bites and had taken a good ribbing from the Anton and I. Then out of nowhere, Tommy lit it up, with two back to back 10 Lb’ers. Total for the day was 5 Steelhead and one Coho. We also had a cow swim past the boat. Heading up river to graze I guess?  Great day on the water, and hope to have many more soon.
