Well the wireless was down the last week that I was in Yak, so that is why no updates in the last week or so. I will putting up all the pictures I have not done for the last Yakutat Lodge clients of the season. I am sending out a Sorry to Paul Zimmerman for not taking a single picture. Paul is by far one of the clients that I really look forward to Seeing every year. I had a great time with Paul just before I left, and I hope to see you (Paul), and the newly weds, next year. To all those who have been looking for their pictures this last week, I will be getting to that tomorrow. So look for them here. And I will also now be posting from Oregon, on Silvers, Fall Chinook, and most importantly, WINTER STEELHEAD!!!!!.

Today was a great day on the river, with allot of good big fish.  The gentlemen I had today, were good fisherman, and a pleasure to fish with.

Well there are some days in Yakutat, that are just plain beautiful. Today was one of those days.The sun was out, and skies stayed clear through out the day. Most important of all, the fishing was great. For the last 5 days I have been fishing 2 holes, and picking up limits before the second hole is worn out. It has been real good fishing. The Silvers are still hitting good, and coming up the river in good numbers. The commercial netting season on the Situk is also yielding good numbers of fish. The rain is due back tomorrow, so we will see what happens. Here are some fish from today. Also some pics of Matt, another guide here at the lodge. He worked hard for this fish, chasing it down river about 150 yards, through stumps and snags, he was able to get the boat in the right place and get this large Silver to the bank without incident. Great job by a great guide. Way to go Matt!!

       Well the river is up, and the fish are on the move. The last 4 days have been spent with two of the most pleasant fisherman I have had the pleasure of fishing with. Although there were some fish lost to bad hook sets, when it counted they came through with flying colors. The fish are in good now, and catching these bright fish is a ton of fun. If you want some of the biggest silvers in Alaska, this is the place to be right now.

Well there was no river trip today for me, but I was able to hook up with the Happy Hooker fleet from the Yakutat Lodge. Looks like the Halibut and the Silvers are available for those going out on the big pond. Here are the pics from all 3 of the Happy Hooker boats.

Another day on the river, and the result was the same. Even after 8 years guiding on the Situk River, I still get excited when a client hooks up with a big Silver Salmon. When fishing for Silvers with jigs, you have to be very quick on the hook set. Because of the fact that the Silvers will hit the jig on the way down, by the time you go to set the hook, the fish is already in the process of getting rid the jig from it’s mouth. By reacting instantly, you can get the hook set before they get rid of it. After several of these missed hook ups, we finally started getting into fish, and holding on. When all was said and done, we had 4 nice Coho in the box, and released near 50 pink salmon. The day was a great success. Here are some pics from today.

Well this morning I took a motor boat and 1 client up the river. On the first cast he was hooked upped, and the fight was on. A few casts later he was on another one, but after a high flying jump, he was gone. After the fast start, things slowed down a bit. We headed up river about 1/4 mile, and found more Silvers, hanging around a log jam. Within 10 minutes, the client was hooked upped again. After landing the second fish, we slowly rowed down stream to the landing. Here are some good pics of these two beauties.

The nets are in the river now, so the fish count will slow in the river for sport fishing for the next couple days.

They should be in good numbers again by Wednesday night.

Today was my first day back on the water, since the vacation.

Water levels are very good right now, and the clarity is perfect. Silvers are coming in to the system, and the pinks seem to be slowing down. Today I took the motor boat, and went up the river with Mike and Debbie, a couple from Seattle Wash. and clients of the Yakutat Lodge. We went about a mile above the landing. We stopped just below the Oxbow, to start fishing. We were fishing a hole called, "The mink hole". Within just about 5 minutes, we had our first Silver in the boat. It took no more than fifteen more minutes to get the second Silver to the boat. Then came a slow down in that hole. We then drifted down stream, casting jigs behind the logs and root wads. With no luck for about 75 yards down stream, I stopped in front of a log that has been good every year. We were able to get several good bites in this hole, but only one to the boat. After about an hour, we drifted further down river, to another log that I knew would have fish behind it. No more than five casts in, we were hooked up with number four. After boating that fish, we slowly rowed down to the landing, taking our time to enjoy one of the rare, sunny Yakutat days.

                                                          We saw no bears or moose today, which is very surprising for this time of year.

Most years the bears are present all the way down the river. The last couple trips I took down the river before my vacation, yielded no sightings of bears. I thought today was going to be a bear sighting day, but there were not even noticeable sign of any bears in the area. I would assume as the year season goes on, the bears will come to feed on the pinks and Silvers in the system. So to all those coming up to visit us in the next 5 weeks, just remember, that the bears will take your fish if you are not carefully with how you handle them. Upon catching a fish, you should immediately knock the fish out, with a stick, rock, or sometimes your fist. After knocking out your catch, put the fish on a stringer (IN THE WATER!). Then cut the gills (IN THE WATER!), to bleed the fish out. When you bleed the fish out, it allows the blood to be removed completely from the fish, including the meat. Doing this will keep your fish fresh longer, and it will also make the meat not taste so "Fishy". When you carry out your fish, keep the fish on the stringer, and attempt to stay in the river as much as possible. If you have to take the trail out, try not to drag your fish, leaving behind scales, blood, and scent along the trail, leaving the next fisherman coming in to deal with the bears that are there looking for the fish that were drug down the trail. Also when you walk in the river, you don’t have to carry the weight of the fish, they will float on the stringer. When you get back to your vehicle, if you have decided to clean your fish out at the river, please do a few things to avoid problems later. When cleaning out you fish, make sure that the guts are thrown far enough out into the current, that they go down river. If the tide is up, take the time to run the guts out into the river, instead of just throwing them out as far as you can from the bank. If you do this on a high tide, when the tide goes out, then the guts just become bear bait, several feet up on the bank. So you have to be sure that the guts make it into the main current of the river.

Remember!  The bear you are dealing with today, may be because of what you did, yesterday!!!

Ok I am back in Yakutat now, and I ready to start catching fish. So I will be updating on a regular basis. The Silvers are coming into the river already. I talked to one of the guide, (Randy Cambell) here at the Yakutat Lodge today. He said the water went up a bit in the last couple days, but the fishing is not to bad. I will let you all know after I go and look tomorrow.
