Sockeye, Kings, Big Dolly’s, Cutthroat, and Rainbows.

This is great when you have so many species of fish to target. In the last 4 days the Yakutat Lodge clients have caught several of each species on a daily basis, when targeted. It has been so fun to see all the different fish and the way they react differently to the same type presentations. Each one hits different and reacts differently from one another.

Kings hit like a feather, except plugs. It’s incredible to see a 30 pound King match the speed of a spinner, eat it, spit it out, and never leave a trace. There is no line stop, no feel, and unbelievable to actually watch it right in front of your eyes in 4 feet of crystal clear water. More than half the Kings that hit we witnessed, and out of those we missed about 30%. Even when you see the lure disappear in their mouth and set hook, there is nothing there, but the fish is shaking his head and swims off into the deep.

Sockeye are nut case fighters, with many runs and very aerial, but they are not traditionally a real bitey fish. Most are caught with a lining style of fishing, but some do bite. We have created a jigging technic that works very well, and you can watch them actually attack the jig and crush it. You will not hook as many fish this way, but you get to actually watch them attack and bite for real.

Cutthroat, Rainbows and Dolly’s are great fighters on light gear and line. We are using King gear so they are the best fight that way, but not to get confused, we are only using 8-15 pound rods, and light braid and 15 pound leader. So we are not using big stuff for the Kings here. It is light gear Kings in a real small arena, making it a big challenge, but tons of fun.

Kings are all catch and release.

Steelhead over, but ocean and reds are hot!!!!

Well the Steelhead season is over now, with only a few stragglers left to play with. Nearly 6,000 for the year.

Reds are showing up now, with 1,000 fish over the weir last night, and also 5 big kings. Was a bit slow for Steelhead due to low water conditions and unusually warm spring weather, but unlike Steelhead the Sockeye don’t mind a little bit of low water to make their run upriver, and they are on the move now.

We are looking forward to good Sockeye season and then into a great Pink and Silver season. There are also large numbers of Dollies in the river during the Salmon runs.

Halibut, Ling-cod, and  Kings continue to produce in the Salt water, with a wide variety of rock fish including Yellow Eye.

If you have not made a reservation at Yakutat Lodge for world class Sockeye and Silver fishing, then this is the time before we fill up. June is a great month for Sockeye fishing before the crowds come in July. We have space available through the next couple months. Looking forward to hearing from you Open-mouthed smile

Fish are everywhere.

The Steelhead in the Situk are coming in everynight now. Big fresh Steelies to catch.  Due to low water conditions allot of the regulars chose to wait a year, but the rain is about to show up and the fishing is going to be unreal.  If you read this and you want to catch tons of Steelhead, then get ahold of Yakutat Lodge. The fishing is about to get real good, and should last through the first week of June.

Call for reservations at 907-784-3232.

Hope to see you here.

OJ tore em up again.

Sunshine and low water are making the afternoon bite very difficult. We are hitting them early, then struggle through the rest of the day. Here are some pics from the last week. We are getting big fish this year, and some big groups of fresh fish have been arriving on the tides this week.

Steelhead popping off.

Well the Steelhead season at Yakutat Lodge and the Situk river is in full swing now. The water level is low and clear, but the fish are everywhere and they are biting off and on. I have had some trips that were very successful, and others that only wielded 5 or 6 fish. Here are the pics from recent days out. There are more fish coming in every night right now, and rain in the forecast could really make it great fishing.

Fear not though, I have been getting some fish, just been lazy about the posts. I have a string of guide trips coming up this week and next, so hopefully I will have some nice pics for you. Here are a few from the last couple weeks and Johns trip.

Flymstr;

Been a real slow start this year.

For some reason the fish are not showing up in good numbers yet. There have been some rivers south of me that have produced fish, but the local and coastal are struggling to say the least. I have been out allot and have only put together a couple good days. I hope it changes when the Native fish show up in February. Here are some pics from the ones I have been able to get into. Mainly all in the raft. Also a thanks to Saito for coming all the way from Tokyo to fish with me for three days. Great time and we did happen to find a few fish with the spey rods. Also if you would like a guided trip for big native steel coming up in Feb. Just email me at situikguide@gmail.com if you cannot get a hold of me through the comment button at the bottom of every post. Thank you for keeping up with the blog and have a good season.
